Financer.com Fighting Against Plastic Pollution in Cyprus

Plastic pollution is a growing global problem. Every year, about 13 million tons of plastic garbage winds up in the oceans and washes up on beaches all over the world.

To give you an idea of how much plastic really is, that’s the worldwide equivalent of 1/3 of all plastic produced in the U.S. each year.

Plastic pollution not only does damage to the environment and harms marine life, but it accumulates on beaches around the world and spoils even the most remote locations.

With millions of Americans taking billions of trips to oceanside destinations each year, no one wants to lie on a beach covered in plastic waste!

We at Financer.com definitely do not.

As part of our annual team-building projects and in honor of World Cleanup Day on September 21, we decided to do something good for the environment and clean up the Toxefetra beach in Cyprus.

The Toxefetra beach is a nature reserve and also the breeding ground for the endangered Caretta Caretta turtles.

Although the mile-long beach was cleaned up about a week and a half ago, we collected a total of nearly 180 pounds of plastic waste. We took the garbage to the local waste processing center where the plastic was properly recycled.

The majority of the plastic waste was only a few inches in size. This so-called microplastic is particularly dangerous as wildlife, including the Caretta Caretta turtles, often confuse it with food and are harmed by trying to eat it. This leads to injuries, illness, and the death of wildlife — all avoidable outcomes.

United Against Plastic Pollution

We realize that clearing a beach will not solve the global problem of plastic pollution. But every contribution helps and it all adds up to help turn the tide against plastic pollution in our oceans.

Each of us can avoid buying single-use plastics and plastic packaging.

Carrying your own cloth bags to the store and using refillable beverage bottles are simple solutions that not only reduce plastic consumption but also save you money.

At Financer.com, we decided to go one step further and financially support charitable organizations to increase the impact of our contribution to combating plastic pollution.

When you compare financial products at Financer.com, you not only save money but also support sustainable aid organizations.

One of the organizations we support is Ocean Mimic, which aims to remove plastic waste from beaches around the world and produce sustainable swimwear.

Overall, the non-profit organization has already removed more than 7 tons of plastic from beaches around the world through its own activities and partner activities.

We know that this alone does not stop pollution, but it’s helping to save the lives of thousands of animals from the plastic waste that is already in their environment.

According to the current trend, plastic pollution is on pace to multiply within the next few years if nothing is done to combat it. In 2050, the amount of plastic waste in the oceans could exceed (by weight) the amount of marine life — which is a staggering thought!
