SoFi Invest is a commission-free brokerage with $0 account minimums, fractional shares, and IPO access. It works best for beginners who want a simple all-in-one financial platform.

Strengths include free financial planning, automated investing, and a clean mobile app. The 1% crypto spread and 10.5% margin rate are competitive weak points.

Limited charting tools and no futures or forex access make it a poor fit for advanced traders.

  • $0 commissions on stocks, ETFs, and options trades

  • No account minimum for active or automated investing

  • Fractional shares starting at $5

This bank has zero interest in actually helping their customers. Christmas Eve I get an email saying they've shut down both my checking and savings accounts. No warning, no heads up, nothing. Called them up and explained I'm out of town and my paycheck gets deposited directly into their account, and all they said was Yeah, your direct deposit will bounce and there's nothing we can do about it. Your account is closed and you'll get a check mailed for whatever's left. Zero compassion and completely unwilling to help me figure out even a short-term fix until I get back home. Never gave me a reason for closing either account. I've even got a credit card through them and never missed a payment. Totally unacceptable and incredibly unprofessional.

Set up my own account as a Plus member with my direct deposit. Everything worked fine. Then we decided to make it a joint account with my husband, though we still use Truist locally for bills. Wanted our savings at Sofi because of their high yield interest, plus they support Crypto/Bitcoin/etc. But we were transferring some of my husband's retirement from Meryl Lynch to Robinhood since it was losing money. Meryl Lynch mailed a certified check with my husband's name and Sofi listed. This happened because I requested direct deposit, but they sent a check anyway. We needed it at Sofi to invest through Robinhood. Would've been harder with Truist. So I had to add my husband for joint access to deposit this check. Meryl Lynch actually mailed 2 checks, one small and one large. Getting the joint account established was ridiculously difficult and I deposited both checks through my mobile app right after setting up the joint account. But I didn't realize the joint account wasn't completely set up until Sofi rejected the large check via email. When I contacted them through chat, they claimed it needed to be deposited from my husband's profile instead of mine. Yet they processed the smaller check in my husband's name from my profile when the joint account wasn't fully established. During our chat, they refused to acknowledge their mistake or the inconsistency. That's not acceptable. It created unnecessary stress and work and they made everything so complicated. They kept making excuses without ever explaining why they accepted the smaller check through my profile under my husband's name.

What Is SoFi Invest?

SoFi Invest is the brokerage arm of SoFi Technologies, a publicly traded financial services company (NASDAQ: SOFI) headquartered in San Francisco. The platform offers commission-free trading for stocks, ETFs, and options, along with automated investing through a robo-advisor.

What sets SoFi Invest apart from most brokerages is its integration with SoFi's broader financial ecosystem. You can manage a checking account, savings account, personal loans, credit cards, and investments all from a single app. That convenience factor is a real draw for people who want to simplify their finances.

SoFi Securities LLC is a member of FINRA and SIPC, meaning your investments are protected up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for cash) if SoFi were to become insolvent. The advisory side, SoFi Wealth LLC, is registered with the SEC.

SoFi Invest Fees and Pricing

SoFi Invest keeps its fee structure straightforward, though there are some costs beyond the headline "$0 commissions" that you should know about.

Active Investing fees:

  • $0 commissions on stocks, ETFs, and options
  • $0 per-contract fee on options (most competitors charge $0.50-$0.65)
  • $0 account minimum
  • $5 minimum for fractional share purchases
  • 10.5% margin interest rate
  • Standard regulatory fees (SEC fee, TAF fee) apply to sell orders

Automated Investing fees:

  • 0.25% annual management fee (added November 2024, previously free)
  • Plus underlying ETF expense ratios (varies by fund)
  • $0 account minimum

Crypto trading:

  • 1% spread markup on all buy and sell orders
  • Access to 27+ cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana

The $0 options pricing with no per-contract fee is genuinely rare. Most brokerages charge $0.50 to $0.65 per contract, so if you trade options frequently, SoFi can save you real money. The margin rate of 10.5% is on the high side compared to Interactive Brokers or Fidelity, but competitive with other app-first brokerages.

Fee TypeCost
Stock & ETF trades$0
Options trades$0 (no per-contract fee)
Account minimum$0
Automated investing0.25% annual fee
Crypto spread1% per transaction
Margin rate10.5%
Fractional shares minimum$5

Key Features of SoFi Invest

SoFi Invest packs several features that make it competitive for its target audience of newer investors and people who value convenience over advanced tools.

Active Investing

The self-directed trading platform gives you access to U.S.-listed stocks, ETFs, options, ADRs (American Depositary Receipts for foreign companies), and cryptocurrencies. You can place market, limit, stop, and stop-limit orders.

Fractional shares let you invest as little as $5 in any stock, which means you can own a piece of companies like Amazon or Berkshire Hathaway without needing thousands of dollars. This is particularly useful for building a diversified portfolio on a smaller budget.

Automated Investing (Robo-Advisor)

SoFi's robo-advisor builds and manages a diversified portfolio of ETFs based on your risk tolerance, goals, and timeline. You answer a few questions, and the algorithm handles asset allocation and automatic rebalancing.

The 0.25% annual fee is in line with competitors like Betterment and Wealthfront. It's worth noting this fee was only introduced in November 2024. Before that, SoFi's automated investing was completely free, which gave it a major competitive edge. Compare the best robo-advisors to see how SoFi stacks up.

IPO Access

One genuinely unique feature is the ability to buy shares in initial public offerings (IPOs) at the offering price. Most retail investors can only buy IPO shares after they start trading on the open market, often at a premium.

With SoFi, any Active Investing account holder can submit an indication of interest (IOI) for upcoming IPOs with no account minimum required. The IOI is non-binding, so you can review the final pricing before committing. Not every IPO will be available, and allocations depend on demand, but having any IPO access at all is uncommon for a commission-free broker.

Cryptocurrency Trading

SoFi relaunched crypto trading in November 2025 after a brief pause, making it the first and only nationally chartered bank in the U.S. to offer direct crypto access. You can trade 27+ cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, and Dogecoin.

The 1% spread on every buy and sell is a notable cost. For comparison, Coinbase Pro charges around 0.5% for lower volume traders, and dedicated crypto exchanges often have tighter spreads. If you plan to trade crypto actively, a dedicated exchange will likely save you money. But for someone who wants to hold a small crypto allocation alongside their stock portfolio, the convenience of having everything in one app might be worth the extra cost.

Crypto trading note

Cryptocurrency is not insured by SIPC or FDIC. Crypto assets are held by SoFi Digital Assets, LLC, a separate entity from SoFi Securities.

Free Financial Planning

Every SoFi member gets complimentary access to certified financial planners (CFPs) at no extra charge. You can schedule sessions to discuss retirement planning, investment strategy, debt management, or general financial questions.

This is a legitimate differentiator. Most brokerages either charge for financial advice or require high account balances for personalized guidance. Fidelity, for example, charges a 0.35% advisory fee for its managed account service.

Account Types Available

SoFi Invest supports several account types to cover different investing needs:

  • Individual brokerage account - Standard taxable investment account
  • Joint brokerage account - Shared account for two people
  • Traditional IRA - Tax-deductible contributions, taxed on withdrawal
  • Roth IRA - After-tax contributions, tax-free growth and withdrawals
  • Rollover IRA - Transfer funds from a former employer's 401(k)
  • SEP IRA - For self-employed individuals and small business owners

How Does SoFi Invest Work?

Getting started with SoFi Invest is straightforward. Here's the process from signup to your first trade.

How to open a SoFi Invest account

Download the SoFi app or visit sofi.com

Create a SoFi account if you don't already have one. You'll need your Social Security number, date of birth, and a valid U.S. address.

Choose your investing approach

Select Active Investing if you want to pick your own stocks and ETFs, or Automated Investing if you prefer a managed portfolio. You can open both types.

Complete identity verification

SoFi will verify your identity, which is typically instant. In some cases, you may need to upload a government-issued ID.

Fund your account

Link a bank account and transfer funds. There's no minimum deposit required. If you also have a SoFi checking account, transfers between accounts are near-instant.

Start investing

Buy stocks, ETFs, options, or crypto. You can purchase fractional shares starting at $5 if you don't want to buy whole shares.

Who Is SoFi Invest Best For?

SoFi Invest works best for a specific type of investor. Here's who benefits most and who should look elsewhere.

Good fit for:

  • Beginners who want a clean, simple interface without overwhelming tools
  • People who already use SoFi banking or loan products and want everything in one place
  • Cost-conscious investors who want $0 commissions including options
  • Anyone interested in IPO access without high account minimums
  • Hands-off investors who want a robo-advisor at a competitive price

Not ideal for:

  • Active traders who need advanced charting, screeners, and technical analysis tools
  • Investors who want access to mutual funds, futures, or forex
  • Margin traders looking for competitive rates (10.5% is high)
  • Frequent crypto traders (the 1% spread adds up quickly)
  • International investors (U.S. residents only)

SoFi Invest vs. Competitors

How does SoFi Invest compare to the other popular commission-free brokerages? Here's a quick look at the key differences.

If you're deciding between SoFi and Robinhood, the main difference is that SoFi offers a robo-advisor and free financial planning, while Robinhood has slightly better trading tools and a cash card with rewards. Both offer IPO access and crypto.

Fidelity is the better choice for serious investors who want research tools, mutual funds, and a wider range of investment options. But Fidelity doesn't offer crypto trading or free financial planning sessions.

For a broader comparison of investment platforms and where to buy ETFs, check our dedicated comparisons.

Is SoFi Invest Safe?

Yes, SoFi Invest is a legitimate and well-regulated brokerage. Here's what protects your money:

  • SIPC coverage - Your securities are protected up to $500,000 (including $250,000 in cash) if SoFi Securities were to fail
  • FINRA membership - SoFi Securities LLC is regulated by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority
  • SEC registration - SoFi Wealth LLC (the advisory arm) is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission
  • Bank charter - SoFi Technologies holds a national bank charter, regulated by the OCC
  • Encryption and 2FA - The platform uses industry-standard encryption and supports two-factor authentication

SoFi is required by law to keep client funds separated from its own operating funds. This means even if SoFi ran into financial trouble, your investments wouldn't be mixed in with the company's assets.

One caveat: SIPC does not cover cryptocurrency holdings. Crypto assets are held by SoFi Digital Assets, LLC, a separate entity.

Limitations and Drawbacks

No brokerage is perfect, and SoFi Invest has some clear gaps that matter depending on how you invest.

Research and tools are basic. If you're used to the charting capabilities of Thinkorswim or the research library at Fidelity, SoFi will feel stripped down. There are no stock screeners, limited technical indicators, and no level 2 market data. For basic buy-and-hold investing this doesn't matter much, but active traders will feel the limitations.

No mutual funds, futures, or forex. SoFi's investment menu covers stocks, ETFs, options, ADRs, and crypto. If you want mutual funds, commodity futures, or currency trading, you'll need a different broker.

The 0.25% automated investing fee is new. Until November 2024, SoFi's robo-advisor was free. The 0.25% fee brings it in line with competitors like Betterment and Wealthfront, but it's no longer the bargain it used to be.

Transfer times can frustrate. Multiple user reports mention delays when moving money between SoFi Invest and SoFi's banking products. This can be inconvenient when you need to fund a trade quickly.

The Bottom Line

SoFi Invest is a solid choice for beginners and people who want their financial life in one place. The $0 commissions, $0 account minimum, fractional shares, IPO access, and free financial planning create a compelling package for newer investors.

The platform falls short for experienced traders who need advanced tools, or for anyone who wants access to mutual funds, futures, or forex. The 1% crypto spread and 10.5% margin rate are also higher than what you'd find at dedicated crypto exchanges or discount brokerages.

If simplicity and an all-in-one financial platform matter more to you than having every possible trading tool, SoFi Invest is worth considering. If advanced trading capabilities are your priority, look at Fidelity, Schwab, or Interactive Brokers instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is investing in SoFi a good idea?

SoFi Invest is a good option for beginners and cost-conscious investors. It offers $0 commissions, fractional shares, IPO access, and free financial planning. However, it lacks the advanced tools that experienced traders need. If you're new to investing and want a simple platform with no account minimums, SoFi is a solid starting point.

Does SoFi Invest charge fees?

SoFi charges $0 for stock, ETF, and options trades. There's no per-contract fee on options, which is rare. Automated investing (robo-advisor) costs 0.25% annually, and crypto trading has a 1% spread markup. Margin interest is 10.5%. Standard regulatory fees apply to sell orders.

Is SoFi Invest good for beginners?

Yes, SoFi Invest is specifically designed for beginner investors. The interface is clean and simple, fractional shares let you start with as little as $5, and every member gets free access to certified financial planners. The automated investing option is great if you don't want to pick individual stocks.

Is SoFi Invest safe?

SoFi Securities is a member of FINRA and SIPC, which protects your investments up to $500,000 (including $250,000 in cash) if the brokerage fails. The platform uses encryption and two-factor authentication. Note that SIPC coverage does not apply to cryptocurrency holdings.

How does SoFi Invest compare to Robinhood?

Both offer $0 commissions and $0 account minimums. SoFi has a robo-advisor (0.25% fee), free financial planning, and IPO access. Robinhood has better trading tools, a cash card, and generally tighter crypto spreads. SoFi is better for hands-off investors, while Robinhood suits more active traders.

Can you withdraw money from SoFi Invest?

Yes, you can withdraw cash from your SoFi Invest account at any time by transferring to a linked bank account. Settlement takes 1-2 business days for stock sales (T+1 settlement). Some users report occasional delays when transferring between SoFi products.

Applying was straightforward the terms and offers were really transparent and we could choose something that worked with our budget without having an extremely long repayment period. After approval, the money became available really fast. And they always send communication about upcoming scheduled payments and statements. Plus keeping us updated on how much we've paid off so far. My only complaint, if I can mention one is all the constant emails pushing me to apply for additional loans. You could dial that back a bit.

They lure you in with low rates then raise them later on. They don't give a damn about you, what you're going through, or if you kill yourself they'll just come after your family.
