BMO Review

This BMO bank review is for U.S. readers who want to know one simple thing before opening an account: is BMO legit, and is it actually a good fit?

Short answer: yes, BMO Bank N.A. is a legitimate FDIC-insured national bank. The better question is whether its mix of branch access, checking fees, savings rates, and customer reviews fits how you bank.

BMO makes the most sense if you live near its branch footprint, want a traditional bank with online account opening, and value no-monthly-fee checking. It is weaker if your main goal is the highest possible savings APY.

Last verified: July 2026. Bank rates, promotional bonuses, and fee waivers change often, so check BMO's current disclosures before applying.

Our verdict

BMO is a real bank and a reasonable everyday banking option, especially for checking. We would consider it for branch access, the $0 monthly maintenance Smart Advantage account, and the no-overdraft-fee Smart Money account.

We would not choose BMO first for cash savings unless its current money market or CD rates beat the best savings accounts available to you. The bank has scale and safety, but its standard savings yield can be low.

Is BMO legit?

Yes. BMO Bank N.A. is a real U.S. national bank headquartered in Chicago and listed by the FDIC under certificate number 16571. FDIC data shows the bank as active, with deposits insured through the Deposit Insurance Fund and 990 domestic offices in its June 2026 institution file.

That matters because deposit insurance is the main safety line for checking, savings, money market, and CD customers. Standard FDIC limits apply per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category.

The correct regulatory frame is also a bank frame. BMO Bank N.A. is a national bank, so the OCC is the primary prudential regulator, the FDIC handles deposit insurance, and the CFPB handles consumer-finance complaints and supervision.

One important detail: do not treat BMO as a single mortgage-license product. BMO is a bank. Mortgage loan officers and lending activities may use NMLS identifiers, but checking and savings accounts are deposit products, not NMLS-licensed products.

BMO accounts and products

BMO is a full-service bank, not just an app or one-purpose fintech. You can use it for everyday banking, saving, borrowing, and credit cards.

For checking, the main options are Smart Advantage Checking, Relationship Checking, and Smart Money Checking. Smart Advantage is the simple option with $0 monthly maintenance. Relationship Checking is the higher-benefit account, but it has a $25 monthly maintenance fee unless you meet waiver requirements. Smart Money is the lower-fee account built to avoid overdraft fees.

For savings, BMO offers Savings Builder, Growth Money Market, CDs, and Alto by BMO for online-only savings and CDs. Savings Builder is easy to open and has no monthly maintenance fee, but the disclosed APY we found was only 0.01% for all balances in the available BMO disclosure. That is why you should compare it with high-yield savings accounts before moving serious cash.

BMO also offers credit cards, personal loans, personal lines of credit, home equity products, mortgages, auto-related lending, and wealth services. If you prefer having deposits and borrowing under one bank, that range is useful. If you only need the highest APY or the best online app, a focused online bank may be stronger.

Personal loansBMO advertised personal loan APRs from 9.89% to 22.14% in search results we reviewedLowest rates require strong credit and other conditions

Rate note

BMO uses ZIP-code and relationship-based rate tables for some deposit products. Treat any APY in this BMO review as a snapshot, not a guarantee. Before applying, check the exact rate for your ZIP code and balance tier.

BMO fees

BMO's checking fees are fair if you choose the right account. Smart Advantage Checking is the cleanest option because it has no monthly maintenance fee and no minimum monthly balance. That makes it competitive with many best checking accounts if you want a branch bank.

The weak spots are add-on and avoidable fees. Smart Advantage lists a $3 paper statement fee, a $3 check image fee, a $3 non-BMO ATM transaction fee, and a $20 overdraft fee. Smart Money avoids overdraft fees, but charges $5 per month unless you are under 25.

The money market account is more balance-sensitive. BMO says the $10 monthly maintenance fee is waived for the first 60 days after opening or when you hold a $5,000 minimum daily balance. If you keep less than that, the fee can wipe out interest quickly.

For most people, the practical decision is simple: use Smart Advantage if you want normal checking, Smart Money if avoiding overdraft fees is the priority, and compare savings rates before using BMO as your main cash-yield account.

BMO pros

  • FDIC-insured national bank with 990 domestic offices as of June 2026

  • Smart Advantage Checking has $0 monthly maintenance and a $25 minimum opening deposit

  • Smart Money Checking has no overdraft fees and only a $5 monthly fee, waived under age 25

  • Savings Builder has $0 monthly maintenance and a $5 monthly reward opportunity for the first year

  • Offers checking, savings, money market, CDs, cards, loans, mortgages, and wealth services

BMO cons

  • Savings Builder APY was only 0.01% in the available BMO disclosure

  • Growth Money Market has a $10 monthly fee unless you keep a $5,000 daily balance

  • Standard overdraft fee is $20 per item on eligible checking accounts

  • Non-BMO ATM transactions cost $3 on several basic deposit accounts

Borrowing with BMO

BMO is not only a deposit bank. It also offers credit cards, personal loans, lines of credit, home equity products, and mortgages.

The credit card range is broad. The BMO Platinum Credit Card was advertised with a 0% intro APR on purchases for 15 months, then a variable APR of 16.49% to 26.49% based on creditworthiness. The BMO Cash Back Credit Card showed a variable purchase APR of 19.49% to 27.49%. The secured card showed a $25 annual fee and a 25.49% variable APR.

Personal loans are more traditional. BMO's search-visible disclosures showed personal loan APRs as low as 9.89% and as high as 22.14%, with terms from 24 to 60 months. That can be competitive for strong-credit borrowers, but you should still compare offers if you are deciding where to get a personal loan.

For mortgages, BMO offers fixed-rate loans, adjustable-rate loans, refinancing, jumbo mortgages, and home equity products. The bank also advertises relationship and autopay discounts on some mortgage or home equity products. Actual mortgage rates depend on property, location, credit, loan size, and timing.

Branch and digital experience

BMO's biggest advantage over online-only banks is physical access. FDIC data listed 990 domestic offices for BMO Bank N.A. in June 2026, and BMO says Smart Advantage customers can use 40,000+ fee-free BMO and Allpoint ATMs in the U.S.

That branch footprint matters if you deposit cash, want in-person support, use cashier's checks, need notary help, or simply feel more comfortable dealing with a banker face to face. It is less important if you already do all your banking from your phone.

The digital experience is mixed. Google Play listed the BMO Digital Banking app at 4.6 stars with about 49,500 reviews in our research. Apple reviews and BMO Reddit threads were more uneven, with repeated complaints around login issues, payments, fraud handling, and customer service.

We would treat the app as functional, not best in class. If mobile banking is your main reason to choose a bank, test the app reviews and compare BMO with newer online banks before switching.

BMO reviews and complaints

Public BMO reviews are not as strong as the bank's safety profile. If you came here for BMO bank reviews, the useful pattern is not one angry comment, but the repeated complaint themes. That is common for large banks, but it still deserves attention.

The BBB profile for BMO Bank N.A. in Chicago showed an A+ rating and accreditation since 1997. That is positive, but BBB ratings are not the same as customer happiness. The same ecosystem also includes complaints and customer reviews, which tend to skew negative for banking service issues.

The CFPB Consumer Complaint Database showed 6,839 complaints for BMO Bank National Association in its July 2026 index. The biggest bucket was checking or savings accounts, with 3,328 complaints. The most common issue category was managing an account.

Trustpilot and BMO Reddit discussions also lean negative. People often go to review platforms after something goes wrong, so do not treat those comments as a full customer survey. Still, the themes are useful: payment servicing, frozen or closed accounts, fraud disputes, and support delays.

Our take: BMO is legit, but not friction-free. If you open an account, keep screenshots of promotional offers, turn on account alerts, watch the first two statements closely, and confirm fee waivers in writing when possible.

Alternatives to BMO

BMO is strongest as a traditional bank. That means your best alternative depends on what you want BMO to do for you.

If you want a large branch bank, compare BMO with Chase, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, PNC, or Bank of America in your ZIP code. Look at branch convenience first, then checking fees, ATM access, and overdraft policy.

If you want higher savings yields, compare BMO with online banks and cash management accounts. For example, our SoFi High Yield Savings Account review is worth reading if you are comfortable banking online. Ally, Marcus, Capital One 360, and other online banks may also offer stronger APYs than a standard branch-bank savings account.

If you want personal loans, compare BMO against banks, credit unions, and online lenders. Our guide to banks that offer personal loans can help you build a shortlist before applying. You can also compare BMO with SoFi if you want an online lender with deposit products.

If you are choosing between a bank and a credit union, read our credit union vs bank guide. Credit unions can be better for relationship pricing, while banks are often better for broad branch and product coverage.

Who BMO is best for

BMO is best for people who want one familiar bank for checking, savings, cards, loans, and branch access. It is also a reasonable option if Smart Advantage Checking fits your needs and you can avoid paper, ATM, and overdraft fees.

BMO is not our first pick for pure savings yield. If you keep a large emergency fund or cash reserve, compare APYs before accepting a standard savings account just because it is convenient.

We would consider BMO if we lived near a branch, wanted a no-monthly-fee checking account, and valued in-person help. We would look elsewhere first if the main goal was maximizing interest or if recent local reviews pointed to support issues at the branch we planned to use.
