Frequently asked questions

What is an ex-dividend date?

The ex-dividend date is the first trading day on which a buyer is generally no longer entitled to the announced dividend. A stock's price may adjust around that date, although normal market movements can make the actual change larger or smaller.

What is the difference between the ex-dividend, record and payment dates?

The ex-dividend date determines which trades normally carry the dividend entitlement. The record date is when the company identifies eligible shareholders, and the payment date is when the dividend is scheduled to be distributed. The dates serve different administrative purposes.

When must you own a stock to receive its dividend?

You generally need to buy before the ex-dividend date and remain entitled under the applicable settlement rules. Buying on or after the ex-dividend date normally does not qualify for that payment. Check the issuer announcement and your broker if timing matters.

Can a dividend date or amount change?

Yes. A company may revise, postpone or cancel a dividend, and operational dates can change. The calendar reflects the latest verified information available, but investors should confirm material decisions with the issuer or exchange before acting.

Are displayed dividend amounts before tax?

Where available, the calendar shows the announced cash amount and currency before an individual investor's taxes, withholding or broker charges. The amount that reaches your account depends on the security, account type, residency, tax treaty and intermediary.
