Frequently asked questions
What is a forward stock split?
A forward split increases the number of shares while reducing the price per share proportionally. In a 2-for-1 split, an investor generally receives two shares for each share held, while each share starts with roughly half the pre-split price.
What is a reverse stock split?
A reverse split combines existing shares into fewer shares and increases the price per share proportionally. In a 1-for-10 reverse split, ten old shares become one new share. Companies may use reverse splits to raise a very low share price.
How should a stock split ratio be read?
A ratio such as 3-for-1 means each old share becomes three new shares. A reverse ratio such as 1-for-5 means five old shares become one new share. The issuer's official notice explains the effective date and treatment of fractional shares.
Does a stock split change the value of the company?
Not mechanically. The share count and per-share price change in opposite directions, so the company's total market value and an investor's proportional ownership are initially unchanged, apart from market movement and any treatment of fractional shares.
Do shareholders need to take action?
Usually a broker or transfer agent adjusts the position automatically. Fractional shares may be rounded, paid in cash or handled under issuer-specific rules. Investors should read the official notice and check their account after the effective date.
Can stock split dates change?
Yes. Announced actions can be revised, postponed or cancelled. The calendar uses the latest verified event record available, but the issuer filing or exchange notice remains the authoritative source for the final ratio and effective date.
